Earlier this month, The National Academy of Sciences issued a landmark report entitled, “The Health Effects of Cannabis and Cannabinoids: The Current State of Evidence and Recommendations for Research” which outright declared that there is conclusive evidence that cannabis can be used as a medicine. Israel, a country known for its history of cutting edge research into cannabis, made a decisive move this past Sunday to decriminalize recreational cannabis use. Its cabinet voted in favor of a new policy that would decriminalize recreational cannabis, focusing instead on drug education and rehabilitation. The country is not alone in its forward thinking, as it joins some 20 countries around the world that are exploring new laws and legislation around cannabis. NASEM Recognizes the Need for Fewer Barriers to Cannabis Research

In a January report from the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM), the organization of medical and health professionals recommended that barriers to cannabis research should be removed. The report, entitled, “The Health Effects of Cannabis and Cannabinoids: The Current State of Evidence and Recommendations for Research,” was a comprehensive review of the available scientific research on cannabis since 1999, when the group last published a similar report. NASEM was formerly known as the Institute of Medicine (IOM), but still functions as a nonprofit group of scientific professionals whose independent reports and reviews have provided important recommendations on…

Legislation Was Recently Proposed by Republican Tom Garrett to End Federal Prohibition of Cannabis

Freshman Republican Senator Tom Garrett of Virginia just took office in January, but has already made quite the entrance with his introduction of legislation that would move to decriminalize cannabis at the federal level. The bill titled, “”Ending Federal Marijuana Prohibition Act of 2017,” is a revamp of a similar bill to reclassify cannabis from 2011. The original bill, which was introduced by the recent contender for the Democratic nomination for President, Independent Senator Bernie Sanders, was defeated. But six years later, eight states have voted to legalize and regulate the growth, sale, use, and possession of recreational cannabis within…

Back in 2000, Colorado was one of the first states in the country to legalize medical marijuana. Then, in 2012, it became the first state to legalize recreational cannabis use, possession, and growth. So let’s back up a little bit and explain where cannabis…

Proposition 64

California, and the Impact of Proposition 64 on the rest of the U.S.

On November 8, 2016, Californians made a definitive mark on the state of recreational marijuana use in the country by approving Proposition 64 to legalize recreational cannabis. As the most populous state in all of America, California is positioned as one of the most significant influencers on the nation in terms of political stance, economic policy, and cultural impact. There are essentially two schools of thought weighing in on the scale of impact that California will have on the nation’s trendline should the state vote to legalize recreational marijuana in this fall’s upcoming election. The opposing side contends that marijuana…

Rohrabacher-Farr Amendment

The Rohrabacher-Farr Amendment passes, medical marijuana-friendly federal funding provision extended through April

On Thursday, December 8, 2016, Congress approved a federal spending measure that keeps the federal government funded through April 28, 2017. The 1,600 page bill allows the current funding authority to stay active and prevented several government office and building closures that would have resulted if the bill had not passed. Included in the packet for approval over the next few months was the Rohrabacher-Farr Amendment, a key marijuana funding measure. The Amendment prevents federal dollars from being spent in interference of any state medical marijuana programs currently in effect. The Amendment’s passage helps keep medical marijuana programs safe for the…
